But it needn't be any more, according to an enterprising Irish company.
Surplus Stock Worldwide uploads dealers' spare parts to its platform where buyers from around the world can view and buy them. There is an annual subscription charge, naturally.
Right now there are nearly 20 million parts on the site. So far they have sold to buyers in more than 100 countries.
The founder of the Enterprise Ireland-backed business reckons many dealers are sitting on €100,000+ of 'dead' parts.
So he developed an online platform that puts buyers and sellers in touch. For the yearly subscription, Surplus Stock Worldwide projects your spare parts to a global audience.
Founder and director Terry Reihill explains: "From talking to dealer principals, it is clear there is a need out there for this service.
"We are providing another route to market, enabling dealers to sell their parts with the added advantage of helping them reduce their redundant parts stocks.
"We are creating a global shop window for these parts."
Among the early adopters of the service are the Charles Hurst group, Donnelly Group, Ashley Ford and the Spirit Motor Group.
